Our Journey Begins In Thruxton

Updated: Apr 19, 2022

Last Wednesday we made our way to Thruxton for our first proper test in our Mini Challenge trophy car. As this was a TOCA test, we got to see the BTCC boys pushing to the limits on Wednesday before we took to the track on Thursday morning.

This was my first visit to Thruxton, with my only prior experience of the track coming from a simulator. After about half a lap my eyes were opened to the sheer speed that these UK circuits involve compared to what I’m used to in Mondello. We used this first session to learn the car and gather some data as well as getting me up to speed with the track.

Heading out to our second session we decided to push the car a little bit more and see where we ended up on the timesheets. I was feeling comfortable behind the wheel and we got our first taste of what the Mini Challenge has to offer, getting into some battles with some of the 30 odd cars on the grid. However, as the session progressed it became obvious we were lacking a little bit of straight line speed, and after a diagnosis we have found the issue and will be back to full attack before the start of the championship.

The Third session of the day was cut short just a few laps in as the car developed a heater rad leak, filling the cabin with steam. Its not the way we were hoping to end the day but with all the experience we gained in the morning sessions we left Thruxton confident and all our focus is now on the first round in Pembrey in May.

I want to say a massive thank you to everyone in JBM who, as always, are giving 110% to make sure we are giving ourselves our best possible chance at the championship.

I also would like to thank my partners O’Brien Cement, West Wales Rally Spares, David Byrne Auto Repairs, Park 100 Fire &

Security, Slaney View Motors and James Travers Garage for their support this year.
